Whether the focus is economic development, domestic manufacturing, reducing waste, expanding housing options, strengthening supply chains, or supporting rural communities, trees and forest-based products increasingly appear in the conversation.

When most of us think about trees, we envision the shade of a large oak on a hot afternoon, the colors of a New England autumn, or the environmental benefits of a healthy urban canopy. After last week’s outing, TCIA staff members may also think about ropes, harnesses, and the challenge of climbing using the same equipment our members rely on every day. Those experiences are real and important, but they are only part of the story.

Across the country, researchers, entrepreneurs, and manufacturers are discovering new ways to turn tree-based materials into products that address some of our biggest challenges. From replacing petroleum-based plastics to developing alternatives to PFAS-containing materials, innovations rooted in forestry and wood science are attracting attention from policymakers looking for practical solutions. In many ways, trees are becoming part of America’s innovation economy.

Lawmakers are doing more than simply observing these developments. At the federal level, the USDA Forest Service continues to invest in innovative wood-product markets through its Wood Innovations Program, which supports advanced manufacturing, mass timber construction, and new uses for wood fiber. Meanwhile, states across the country have adopted building code provisions that allow greater use of mass timber, creating new opportunities for engineered wood products in housing and commercial construction.

Closer to home, forestry and economic development leaders in New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, and New York have worked together to advance a regional mass timber strategy, viewing innovative wood products as an opportunity to support forests, create jobs, and strengthen rural communities.

Recently, researchers at the University of Maine developed a wood-based foam insulation material designed as an alternative to polyurethane foam commonly used in beverage coolers. Made from wood fiber, wood flour, and cellulose nanofibrils, the material performed similarly to conventional insulation in early testing while relying on renewable forest-based resources rather than petroleum-derived chemicals. The research is still evolving, but it offers a glimpse into how forest products may find new applications in everyday products.

Research like this arrives at a time when lawmakers in Washington and many state capitals are wrestling with a common question: How can we reduce waste, improve sustainability, and support domestic manufacturing at the same time?

As states continue to consider policies related to packaging waste, recycling systems, and restrictions on certain chemicals, researchers are exploring whether materials derived from wood can provide viable alternatives. Multiple states have already enacted laws restricting PFAS, often called “forever chemicals,” in consumer products and packaging, while additional legislation continues to be introduced around the country.

Forestry and forest products researchers are responding with new ideas.

Researchers are exploring a variety of approaches. One particularly interesting example comes from Maine, where researchers have been developing a PFAS-free fire suppressant made from cellulose nanofibers derived from wood. They found the material could help extinguish fires while avoiding the environmental concerns associated with certain traditional firefighting foams.

Related research is exploring the use of nanocellulose, an advanced material produced from wood fiber. Universities, government laboratories, and private companies are studying applications ranging from packaging materials to industrial products and biomedical uses.

These examples represent only a portion of the innovation taking place across the forest products sector. From advanced building materials and sustainable packaging to next-generation cellulose technologies, researchers continue to identify new ways to create value from renewable forest resources.

What’s particularly noteworthy is that many of these innovations align with priorities shared across the political spectrum.

Policymakers may disagree on specific approaches, but there is growing interest in technologies that turn renewable natural resources into practical solutions.

For those of us in the tree care industry, that should sound familiar.

Tree care professionals have long understood that trees provide benefits far beyond aesthetics. Healthy trees support communities, improve quality of life, contribute to local economies, and provide the raw materials that fuel a broad range of industries. Today’s emerging innovations simply add another chapter to that story.

From wood-based insulation and advanced packaging materials to engineered timber and next-generation cellulose technologies, researchers are finding new ways to unlock the value of one of America’s most abundant renewable resources.

The next breakthrough material may not come from a laboratory built around rare minerals, exotic chemicals, or imported resources.

It may come from a tree.

And while researchers, manufacturers, and lawmakers explore what’s possible, TCIA members continue doing the work that makes it all possible: growing, maintaining, and managing the trees that support both our communities and an increasingly innovative forest products economy.
