"We were advised that several limbs of our catalpa tree had to be removed. We had something like 30 days to make a decision, or they’d cancel our insurance."

Today’s battery technology offers performance that rivals gas, but adoption is still gradual across the industry. Some users remain skeptical, citing concerns over runtime, power or charging logistics. Others already are integrating battery-powered tools into their fleets, often experiencing less... downtime, easier maintenance and quieter operation for early-morning residential work.
Alongside the rise in battery-powered tool performance, additional forces are accelerating the shift away from gas reliance. Legislative support, financial incentives and increased industry awareness can make early adoption more viable – and even strategic – for tree care companies looking to stay ahead of emerging regulations.

“Safety and arboriculture just go hand in hand. Period. End of story.”
– Ezekiel Willard, ISA Board Certified Master Arborist
At Vermeer, we ...stand behind arborists who lead with intention—those who prioritize safety not just as a practice, but as a principle. Their commitment inspires how we show up as a brand: supporting professionals who raise the bar, share best practices, and build cultures where safety is second nature.
That’s why we’re proud to be a sponsor of the Tree Care Industry Association—an organization where forward-thinking arborists, like those at Idaho Tree Preservation, come together to help shape the future of professional tree care."

When a devastating tornado tore through greater St. Louis in early May 2025, it didn’t just ravage neighborhoods and topple century-old trees in Forest Park—it also galvanized an extraordinary spirit of solidarity within the arborist community. In his recent article, Andrew Jones, CTSP of ...Rooted Arbor Care, captures both the heartbreak of seeing beloved oaks fall and the inspiring response that followed: while some preyed on vulnerable homeowners, a far more powerful narrative emerged as tree care companies from across the region—and even out of state—rallied together, not to compete, but to collaborate in restoring the urban landscape and the community that depends on it.

TCIA was proud to have multiple staff members take part in this year’s Tour des Trees, the annual cycling event that raises funds in support of the TREE Fund. Since 1992, the Tour has traveled through communities planting trees, engaging with the public, and highlighting the importance of ...science-based tree care—all while helping the TREE Fund award more than $5.4 million in grants and scholarships to advance arboriculture and urban forestry.
👏 We’d like to recognize TCIA’s own riders: Dave White, CEO & President; Jenn Gagne, Coordinator, Accounts Payable, Finance; Cole Fortin, Coordinator, Corporate Engagement; and Don Staruk, Director & Editor, TCI Magazine. Each tackled the multi-day, 400+ mile ride with grit and determination!

We can spend all kinds of our hard-earned money on different work toys that make loud noises or allow us to glide down ropes, but at the end of the day, the most efficient person is the one who engages the right tool for the right job.

"Over a century ago, founder A. A. Fanno—who began his career as a boat builder and carpenter in the Northwest—settled in the Chico, California area and ...purchased an almond orchard. It was here that he invented his first pole saw out of necessity: needing to trim high tree limbs from the ground. That ingenious curved blade design became the foundation of the “Fanno” tooth saw, celebrated for its fast, non-binding cut in green wood and lasting sharpness in hardwoods!"

With so many tree workers in California alone, many have competed in tree-climbing competitions. So, a consensus of arborists finally put words into action earlier this year, leading to the first California Line-Clearance Competition (CLCC), which took place at the University of California, Davis ...Arboretum. Pictured are the first-place Spar Wars team of Nicholas Dorer, CTSP, and Ramon Rodriguez-Barragan.

We often hear the phrase, “You are responsible for your own safety.” There is much truth in this statement. You have the greatest stake in your own wellbeing. It is your life, so never relinquish your personal safety to others. But working within the chaotic environment of a natural disaster, ...it is good to have someone else who has your back. It is not relinquishing your responsibility for personal safety – it is sharing that responsibility. One effective means of improved safety for workers during natural disasters has been the buddy system. This is a system in which two or more workers share in the responsibility for their collective safety and wellbeing.
